Winching Out

Went in the other end of the logging trail and had to winch up a short section. Turned out to be a little more difficult than I'd planned.

Did some more trail work. Forgot to sharpen the saw so had a rough time cutting. Pulled the trail cam but only got one moose.

I was told this trail was open so had to check it out.
Merry Christmas. My father and I rented the basement apartment in the building you are staying in the summer of 1970. I worked around the corner at Pt. Chehalis cannery. Do you know David Little (photographer)? He is around there sometimes? I may come and visit Cordova in the summer. Merry Christmas!
Don't know Dave personally but he's still in town. The cannery is now Trident North. Thanks for watching.
Beauty day! 9:30 - You have those too eh? Different States and/or Provinces have different rules. Always wondered what Alaska's rule was & now I know - - - 23:30 - When the hips say it's time to quit . . . well then, it's time to quit - - - Looked like a productive day! Thanx for taking us along!
I got no problem with them. It's not bear season. BTW using trail cameras for hunting is illegal. Yeah the tin hip needs a lube. (:>
Good to visit Grizz and Chucky!
Yes it is.
I lived and worked in Cordova from 1971 to 1973-74 time period. I worked as a bush pilot for a local company called Parkair that was owned by Tom Parker. Supporting the fishing fleet during spring/summer/fall was a big part of the flying. We would fly into the sloughs around the Copper River to bring supplies, parts and fisherman to their anchored gillnetters. The boat harbor now has really changed from my day. We would operate float planes out of the harbor until Eyak lake opened up. I watched the Power Creek road video from 3 years ago. I was amazed to see the Cordova Airlines hangar still standing. Mudhole Smith owned Cordova Airlines and i learned that mile 13 airport is now named after him. His son Wayne operated Chitina Air Service from that hangar. Parkair had a dock and buildings at the end of the Eyak Lake airstrip. I noted that they are no longer there. When flying was slow, I helped the carpenter build the upper living quarters. By chance, do you know what happened to the former Parkair dock/buildings that was on the lake at the end of the runway ? BTW, Power Creek road was NOT paved when I lived there. Dirt/gravel road with nasty pot holes.
Power Creek is only paved to the end of the runway and it still sucks. Washed out a couple times and a few people have died going over the edge into the lake. The buildings were occupied by Ketchum Air for a while. Then we had a big flood and everything got torn down after. Thanks for watching.
@@rawsonforever I know about going into the lake ! It was winter, icy road and a curve in the road. I was driving Tom’s VW van, lost control and went into the lake. Fortunately myself and van not hurt too bad. For me, it was my pride. Guy Beedle pulled the van out with his front loader. I’ve been reminiscing today about my time there. I was 22 when I moved there and have to say some of the most unique people I have ever come across in this world ! I was married in Cordova and my son born at the local hospital. Don’t miss that awful weather !! Thanks for the reply. It was sad for me to see the facility gone. Tom died in a midair collision fish spotting I learned years ago. Lost track of his wife Stephanie years ago though they were divorced before his passing. Thanks again for the response. Cheers
Very cool that you got to see a bear
I see them all the time but their gone by the time I turn the camera on. Thanks for watching.
WOW, you were very close to it when you came around that corner. It must've been deaf - lol - - - How hard is it to take the card out of your trail cam? Just curious why you don't take out the card and replace it with another instead of taking the camera home? I may have asked you this question once before, but I can't remember because I'm old - HAHAHAHA!!! - - -
It's actually closer than it seems on the camera. You know the GoPro depth perception thing. The card pops right out. I considered it but have to get another card. Anyway this gives me an excuse to go out and plant it on another trail. Thanks for watching.
Had a ball in Cordova, got to visit several times in bands. Played the Black Sheep, the Alaskan Hotel, and the Reluctant Fisherman, and jammed at the Club...fun times
The Black Sheep and The Club have been closed for many years. The Alaskan is for sale. The Reluctant doesn't have a stage anymore. Thanks for watching.
Thanx for the tour!
Glad to be your guide. (:>
Nice day out its barely raining!
Been back and forth. Pour, Drizzle and Howl. Jim tell you he got stuck at the golf course and had to be towed?
John, I thank you very much for your videos. I really miss Cordova. I rode the trails you ride now, many times. I lived in Cordova for approximately 40 years. Now living in South East Texas, I sure miss "Out the Road", that was Cordova!
Not surprised you miss it. The road ends at 37 mile now. bridge washed out and about a mile of road beyond that. Thanks for watching Glen.
Looked like a beauty day fir a ride! - - - 22:35 - wow, lots of bergs on the lake - - - Thanx for taking us along!
High water breaks things up. When I got home I reviewed the Enchanted Forest video from earlier this summer and found I didn't go far enough back to find that game trail. But that's for another day. Thanks for watching.
sorry man i have trouble watching your videos with all the heavy breathing. It sounds like I am being chased by a serial killer on a quad.
My spark plug cap has a tear on the side. I ordered a replacement from Rokon. Do you know if the cap will just pop off? I would appreciate any help. Thanks
It should, but as you can see from the video everything is a really tight fit.
That Mossy trail sure is beautiful.
That it is. Thanks for watching.
Hehe another day with a bit of struggling going there on the narrow trail, I can really feel how it feels like being there.
Another fun day following old trails. If everything went right we'd have nothing to talk about. Thanks for watching.
Another 75 feet down & 450 to go! Slowly but surely gettin' there! - - - I always mount my winch switch on the other side so I can hang onto both handlebars and use my throttle to assist while I'm winching. Try sitting on your quad next time so you don't injure yourself. It won't flip when it's tied down with the winch & it's plenty strong enough to carry your extra weight if you are assisting with the throttle. No offence, just trying to be helpful so you don't get hurt my friend. - - - That was quite the day! Thanx for taking us along!
My legs don't bend to good so getting on and off all the time can wear me out. I was sitting on the fender most of the time. This was just one of them times everything wanted to fight me. Jamed winch, short cable, wrong angle. But it was fun. Thanks for watching.
Oh is that all you have to do to change the oil disassemble half the fuckin bike?
Nice work mate 👍
A little bit at a time. Thanks for watching.
Nice to see the Moose on game cam.
That same spot couple weeks ago (Busy Trail Video) had moose, coyote pups, martin, and two brown bears. All in four days. This week one moose in seven days. Thanks for watching.
Slowly but surely & then one day you'll be through!
One bottle of Tylenol at a time (:>. Thanks for watching.
So far so good?
Very happy with it.
I'm kind of surprised the other quadders that are going in there haven't jumped in on the fun of connecting those two trails. Oh well, slowly but surely it'll get done.
I don't think anyone else goes in there. Anyway it was my idea and I enjoy doing it alone. Don't have to argue with anyone on how to do it or which way to go. Thanks for watching. PS. Jim's supposed to be out cleaning his own trail today.
It's a lot of work cleaning up those trails, so there should been not only you doing that.
There's other riders on other trails. I've taken on this one as a personnel project. It was totally blocked when I found it. Jim from the Broknex channel is working on his own trail project. Thanks for watching.
Awesome work mate keep it up 👍
Thanks for watching. I used to talk with a guy from Taz. He lived in Rosebury? Name was Mick but screen name was Jodalajoda. Hung out with us on RokonWorld. Passed away a few years ago.
Ok I live not far from there at all mate 👍
Cool
Slowly but surely the old fart is getting the trail done.
I switch around and work from the other end to keep things interesting. But it's a longer ride to get there. Thanks for watching.
Dang, I thought for sure you were gonna keep going at 18:37. Must've looked a lot better on camera then on real life. - - - 28:46 - looks like a new project😉 - - - Things looked pretty good overall. Not a ton of winter destruction. Thanx for taking us along!
I was pretty wore out so called it quits. I'll be glad just to get this project finished. Little by little it's getting better and better. Thanks for watching.
1:52 - Run Forest! Run! HAHAHAHA!!!
Was hoping to see what spooked them but no luck. Thanks for watching.
lol - that's cool! Just got home from a 2 week trek through BC. Trying to catch up on my videos!
Hope it was a trail riding trek?
@@rawsonforever . . . nope, just a car tour with my wife, visiting relatives & friends.
😒
Good catch. What brand and model trailcam do you have? It have good quality.
Vikeri Model A1. Never had one before so got it cheap on Amazon to try out. Uses 8 AA batteries. So far not bad.
Really like that old forest, and not a place I would like being in the dark. Grizzly would also keep me at home from that poop. Great you did capture a bear on the cam.
We're up to our ass in bears. They come into town all the time. Thanks for watching.
Good ride!
Thanks for watching.
There is quite a lot of work you have to do to get the trail ready, and you have to do it every year I reckon
It's the same every year on every trail with the snow pushing stuff over. The state doesn't maintain the trails. Us riders do it. This particular trail hasn't been used in many years except by trappers. Thanks for watching.
Looks like need start at begining cut much wider then come back every day for month do same until trail open all way . Not to much longer if not reopened that trail be grown in totally . Lots work but if guy did few hrs a day for month or so could make so stays usesable for more yrs .
It's a work in progress. Thanks for watching.
It's really cool with trailcam, and great seeing the bear kissing/sniffing the camera
That was a busy trail. Thanks for watching.
Enjoy ride papa John ❤
Thanks for watching.
I'll pass on all that. Good footage of a huge beast.
It just wants a hug Daniel.
@@rawsonforever Ain't no way, I like to move around in the darkness. Lot of black bears here but they usually mind their own business, them things up your way would kill me.
That brown pouch on my belt is the spare ammo for the 454 on my hip.
Awesome!🙌🏼
Thank you!! 😁
Thank you very much for your update on the harbor project John! I have been wondering about how it is going. After 24 years of taking care of that old dock system, it sure was in need of replacement! My hats off to Harbormaster Tony, (and his crew of course), and the rest of the Harbor Commision for all their hard work to get this done! I have really enjoyed all your videos from all the way down here in Texas and the Philippines, after my retirement in 2016!
Who is this?
@@rawsonforever Glenn Anderson. I'm the red head who worked at the harbor from May of '93 until October of 2016.
Hey Glen. I was thinking it was Charley. Outside of Tony I don't know any of the new crew.
Yeah buddy! Those were some awesome trails! Looked like an awesome day of riding! 7:10 - Can never get tired of that view! Glaciers are super fascinating! 26:00 - beauty view! Good stuff! Thanx for the tour!
Then it started to rain and it hasn't stopped. No end in sight. Thanks for watching
Very interesting! Thanx for sharin' buddy!
My pleasure!!
There are a lot of small fishing boats, I guess they are for salmon fishing and recreation?
It's salmon season. They also do halibut, cod, rockfish and others. There are 5 canneries here. The harbor can hold seven hundred boats. Thanks for watching.
@@rawsonforever Ah cool. Yes salmon season in Alaska is in the early summer I heard, and I wish we could have the same in the sea but we doesn't have that much salmon.
The season starts in May and runs into September.
Lots of changes last few years!
Had to be done.
What are you alloying to the boots? Shoe wax? Neutral color?
The brand name is Mink Oil. I also use Huberd's Shoe Grease. Thanks for watching.
"That, is a big pile of grizzly $hit" - HAHAHAHA!!!! - that was funny! I got home late last night from a camping/quadding trip up north and saw this video while having my morning coffee today. Couldn't help but watch it! - LOL
Piles that big might have some bells in it.(:>
@@rawsonforever 🤣🤣🤣
Good it was not fresh
That's a HAPPY RIDE DAY for sure on the one sunny day!
Now it's your turn. (:>
Jim been waiting for a new video 👍🏻
Appreciate the video as always!! Does Jim have his Can Am back yet and up n running?? 👍🏻
He got it back last week. Thanks for watching.
It is good that the snow have melted now. That small river, do it have trout or salmon or both? We also have some glaciers, but you are lucky that can actually drive with atv and look at them. I mean for tourists it would be amazing.
I've never seen fish in it. On the other side of Sheridan Glacier from where I'm riding there is a road. You can see it on Google Earth. We used to get a lot of tourists came here to see Miles and Childs glaciers. They calved into the river right in front of the road. Then the road washed out and the state says it's too expensive to repair. Thanks for watching.
Skj ..5m43..ya
Looked like a beautiful day for a ride! Awesome views from Top of the World! Good tour. Thanx!
Good thing I went that day. Started raining that night and forecast is for into next week. Was using the new video cam at the top. Very pleased with the improvement. Thanks for watching.
